Hillsong Young & Free released an acoustic remix of their Grammy-nominated album Youth Revival. Young & Free unites the dance mix and pop sounds with the solid Hillsong worship message. Youth Revival Acoustic changes the pace with a contemplative sound for worshipers and Y&F fans.

The original Youth Revival debuted at No. 1 on Billboard Praise & Worship Chart. Youth Revival Acoustic includes eight tracks from the original. The album is also a full visual album with video recordings of each acoustic track (think Beyonce’s Lemonade). Two studio versions are also included: “Real Love” and “Falling Into You.”

The title of the album might lead one to expect a coffee house version of the Young & Free tunes. Instead, the group brings a stripped-down version of their music, leaving the high-tech instruments out of only a few cuts. Even so, this album does have a different vibe from the high-energy beats we expect from Y&F.

“Only Wanna Sing” is one of the tracks with a truly acoustic sound. Lyrics that could describe this album echo as pianos fill the moment:

This is no performance
Lord I pray it’s worship…

And I can’t imagine why
I would do this all for hype

‘Cause it’s all to lift You high

Vocals take center stage in “Never Alone.” The message of God’s faithful presence comes through clearly with all of the production stripped away.

The soundtrack switches gears a bit with the tender ballad duo, “In Your Eyes.” This love song for a Savior is beautiful as an acoustic version. It is one of the songs that seem to work better on Acoustic than the original album.

Y&F breathe fresh life into the classic worship song “I Love You Lord” on Acoustic. “Passion” opens with the familiar words, “I love you, Lord // And I lift my voice // To worship You // Oh my soul rejoice.” The song takes on a chapel-esque persona. Their voices seem caressed by sunlight filtered through stained glass. It is a reverent performance, a highlight of this remix collection.

“Real Love” and “Where You Are” retain the pop sound Y&F is known for. It’s a bit more mellow than the original, but not enough to add to your “relax” playlist. The words of “Where You Are” certainly capture the heartbeat of these fresh-faced artists.

I’m lifting you higher, higher
There’s nothing that I’d rather do
A sweet elevation of praises
There’s no one I love more than You

Youth Revival Acoustic certainly delivers an attitude and heart of worship. For Y&F fans, the album will provide an opportunity for a bit more focus and reflection. Folks who don’t like to mix the Y&F dance beat with their worship lyrics will find a collection of sincere songs to enjoy. Youth Revival Acoustic provides a middle ground for worshipers from all genres to join in praise of our one God.
